Water Polo Pushing for a Return to State

Since the beginning of freshman year, Mitchell Lee, senior, has created close bonds with his varsity teammates enhancing the team’s dynamic in their journey to State last season.

“It was extremely stressful, but also really fun,” Lee said. “Everybody was taking it very seriously, opposed to other games where we joke around.”

The intensity of the sport and the fast paced games develops a strong team bond designed to bring success. With large hopes, the team will be able to advance to finals this year, Lee said.

“I think we’ve eased up a little bit and this year is going to be more fun because we’re mostly seniors,” Lee said.

Finishing fourth in State last year, Water Polo is pushing to return back to State for an even larger win.

For Tim Mosby, head water polo coach, attending State is one of his most special moments throughout his six year coaching career at MHS. This year, though, Mosby expects the team to progress even further.

Winning more games and placing higher in State is predicted this spring because of the talent and experience of both junior varsity and varsity, Mosby said.

Mosby plans to focus on water polo only and not on any external matters found outside the pool.

“In years past, that kind of thinking has dragged us down a little bit,” Mosby said.

He also emphasizes that the team’s chemistry helps with their overall success.

While they aren’t all best friends outside of the pool, the team look outs and stick ups for another, Mosby said.

Taryn Zweifel, freshman, is joining the JV team this year. She’ll be one of the the six girls on the co-ed team.

Zweifel, like the rest of the team, is wanting to see Varsity make it to State.

“If Varsity works really hard, they can easily make it all the way to State,” Zweifel said.

Junior varsity, though, is hoping for a spot in the top four this year, Zweifel said.

So far, Zweifel is enjoying the team and the many practices that come with it.

“This is my first time having a different coach,” Zweifel said. “He really wants to win this season and he’s gonna work us hard.”

The school participation at water polo games is less than what the team hopes for.

Sometimes the team is able to get friends to come out, especially on Senior Night. Otherwise, most people don’t come out besides parents, Lee said.

“Come out and see us play,” Lee said.
