MHS players huddle up before the last preseason game versus Westminster. MHS lost the game 2-1, finishing second in the preseason tournament.

After a season that saw them win the Wickenheiser Cup, MHS hockey will look to build on last season’s success.

Their first test came against Westminster on September 27 in the preseason championship game, which they lost 2-1.

Senior Spencer Turner, right wing, opened the scoring in the second period, Westminster tied it later in the period, with the game winning goal coming on a late third period power play.

“It was good, could have been better, I wish we would have won though,” Turner said.

This season the team aims to compete for the Challenge cup, Missouri’s most prestigious tournament.

“We’ve grown as a team, we’ve gotten better, and we’ve picked up some better freshman this year. Our returning players have gotten better and more experienced,” senior Will Chase, left wing said. “I think we can be a contender in that cup.”

The varsity team will face off against Vianney on November 3rd to start off the season.

“We’re going to be practicing and work better as a team and as soon as we can get those points put in place, we can hopefully do well this year,” Will Chase said.

One of the younger players returning to the team is sophomore Ben Chase (Will’s brother), center.

“The cause of our success is that we’re learning how to play as a team more and understanding how to play together to win games,” Ben Chase said.

Not very many changes will take place in the team. They aim to keep everything as basic as they can: a strategy that they hope will lead them to contend in the challenge cup.

“We have a bigger goal than we did last year, so we’re trying to keep everything as basic as we can,” Ben Chase said. “There aren’t many big changes going on but the changes we have made are to help fit in the new guys that are on our team.”
