Club Spotlight: HOSA

Joining clubs can be a great way for students to experience possible future career areas. For students hoping to go into the medical field, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) provides an opportunity to learn more about health careers.

Students in HOSA prepare projects related to health careers for an annual competition. This year’s competition is on Tuesday, March 25 at East Central College in Union, Missouri.

The projects can be done individually or in groups. One option students have is to make a public service announcement video about a designated theme for the competition.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in a quiz bowl. They answer questions about medical terms and information about specific medical fields.

MHS’s HOSA students meet after school in science teacher Lisa Del Pizzo’s room. At meetings, members of HOSA talk about upcoming events, projects, and fundraising.

Ema Mathai, senior, joined HOSA at the beginning of her junior year. Mathai said she plans on making a poster focusing on a medical career for her HOSA competition project this year.

Mathai said she wants to study medicine in the future. She enjoys the chance to learn about her possible future careers from HOSA.

“It gives me a broader perspective of the health field,” Mathai said.
