Mustangs defeat Mehlville Panthers 52-0 in Homecoming game

The Mustangs defeated the Mehlville Panthers 52-0 in the annual Homecoming game.

Jason Powers, senior, threw four touchdown passes in the victory as the Mustangs won for the first time since falling to rival Lafayette in a 27-20 loss last week.

“That loss left a bad taste in our mouths.” Power said. “One of our goals as a team is to not lose two in a row and we came back and did what we had to do. We’re excited to get the win. Its great for us.”

With the victory, the Mustangs improved to 4-1 on the season, their best start in years. The team has beaten Ritenour, Northwest, Jackson, and now Mehlville, losing just once to Lafayette.

“We’re excited to see where things go. If we play like we did tonight, they could be big,” Powers said.

Highlights of the game include a 25-yard interception by defensive back Wendell Bronner Jr., sophomore, and a 45-yard touchdown by wide receiver Nick Bulanda, junior.

Matt Klein, varsity football coach, was quick to point out the roles that every player had during the win.

“It was more of our defense, getting a couple of scores and our special teams putting us in a very good place to be successful,” Klein said. “We had a couple of good offensive drives at the beginning of the game but from there it was just our defense and special teams leading the way. It’ll look like an offensive win but everybody chipped in tonight.”

Klein said that he was pleased with the bounce back effort from his team after the loss to Lafayette last week.

“In football you practice for a whole week before you play again so it’s a while before you get to try and get that losing feeling out so our kids came in and did what we wanted to do to get the win,” Klein said.  “We’re proud of our guys.”
