Field hockey loses 2-1 to LHS

The MHS field hockey team suffered a tough 2-1 loss at LHS Saturday morning.

LHS’s early energy helped the Lancers out to an early 2-0 lead in the first half with goals by Mara Hunt and Anna Savala. Although Marquette would push the ball into LHS territory, they couldn’t find the net against the brick wall of the Lancer defense.

After a motivational timeout in the second half, LHS forward Chase Halleman, senior, scored with 50 seconds left to make the game 2-1.

“The game against Lafayette was a tough one. It took us too long to wake up and play,” Nina Walters, varsity field hockey coach, said after the game. “We got things figured out too late causing us to lose 2-1. But we learned from the game what we need to do to improve, its still early on, and improvement will happen”.

Brianna Conin, LHS goalie, had seven saves during the game while Katie Karmeier, senior goalie had 5 saves for the Mustangs.

“Marquette and Lafayette have always been big rivals, so playing against them is always intense,” Mia Schweain, MHS senior defender, said. “Unfortunately Lafayette came out with the win this time, but I’m proud of how we played as a team and how hard we worked until the final whistle.”

The Mustangs get back on the field Wednesday against Cor Jesu at 4:00.
