If you walked through the doors of Lafayette High School yesterday, you were greeted with a row of tables overflowing with laundry facilities, kitchen items, cleaning supplies and miscellaneous home goods. Walk downstairs to the gym, and you saw the bleachers packed with parents, grandparents and friends of the people performing at Cheer for Charity.

JV and varsity cheer, along with JV and varsity Mystique, performed at Cheer for Charity, a showcase of local cheer and dance teams,  yesterday in the Lafayette gym. To watch the showcase, you had to bring a household item or $5 to donate to the Ronald McDonald House.

Mystique member Carson Hartung, senior, said that varsity performed their competition pom routine to ‘Country Girl’ and an all-squad kick routine to “Winter Wonderland.”

To prepare for this performance, “we’ve had afternoon practices every Monday and two six a.m. practices a week,” Hartung said.

Lily Reasoner, sophomore, said the JV squad performed their pom routine to Lady Gaga mix.

“We’ve been working really hard,” Reasoner said.

Carmen Murphy, sophomore, said JV and freshman cheer practiced together after school the week leading up to the performance and varsity performed a different routine by themselves.

“We picked a winter song, and we just made up a little performance to it with a dance and stunts,” Murphy said.

Cheerleader Erin Grossmann, sophomore, said the JV squad performed really well, and the freshman team was a good addition to their squad.

“I think [Cheer for Charity] is a great idea to have the cheer and dance community give back,” Grossmann said.

Junior Kate McAllister, varsity cheerleader, said that she thinks the varsity squad tried their best and worked well as a team.

“It was all for a good cause,” McAllister said.
