This fall, many sports teams have received new uniforms not only to create a new look for themselves, but to unify the whole MHS athletic department.

Shane Matzen, athletic director, has made many improvements to MHS athletics but not only in uniforms.

“I have talked with a lot of the staff and coaches, and we want a consistent image for Marquette but it is going to take a few years,” Matzen said.

These advancements include: a modern new logo, new sports apparel, new signs and banners around the school, and a new way of spreading information on MHS athletic programs using twitter. Matzen wants people to view MHS in a new and modern way through these updates.

“A good example is Mizzou,” Matzen said. “Mizzou has a standard logo, but uses it in many different variations with their sports teams.”

The Mustangs on certain sports teams aren’t specifically just getting new uniforms because they get them every year, but because Matzen’s project is underway. These new uniforms include the new MHS logo on them. That way, all of the teams will be linked through their clothing on the field.

“When you look better, you feel better and then you play better,” Steve Conway, boys assistant varsity soccer coach, said.

This year, the soccer team received a new green jersey to go along with their other two jerseys which are blue and white. For home games, the Mustangs are decked out in their white jerseys and for away games they wear blue and green.

“It is a good idea to have the same logo for all of the teams, but it is going to be hard to change and I have a feeling it will be more strict when making the uniforms,” Conway said.

The varsity softball team also got new uniforms for this fall and their upcoming seasons.

“Our new uniforms are a lot better than previous years and we look more feminine,” Amanda Lang, junior, said.

Many varsity teams hand down their uniforms when they get new ones to the program’s jv and freshman teams, thus allowing for the whole program to be affected.

“It is nice to have a variety in uniform colors and when you work yourself up to varsity, you get better uniforms,” Libby Stokes, senior, said.

The varsity volleyball team additionally got new uniforms. Casey Randolph, junior and one captain of the volleyball team, has been playing for the Mustangs since she was a freshman.

“When we get new jerseys, it helps the whole program because the jerseys get passed down to jv and freshmen teams,” Randolph said.

The new logo is starting to get spread all over school this year, so it will be the set design for years to come because the uniforms are passed through the program.
