Seniors to commit on signing day

Every year, many seniors sign to a college of their choice, and MHS recognizes students’ achievements with signing day, which is happening a little different this year on Saturday, March 8 at 11 a.m.

Usually each individual has his own specific day with only himself and his family and friends, but this year, every student is getting together on the same morning to all sign together. However, if any students need to sign a certain day because of special college requirements, then we will help them.

“This day is to say, ‘I’m going to college and I’m doing something above and beyond college’,” Activities Director Shane Matzen said.

All activities are invited, including being orchestra, band, newspaper, sports, etc. The ROTC program is also invited, for students going into the military.

“They’re not going to college, but they’re serving our country and I want to honor that,” Matzen said.

He said the school can’t recognize all the students who have signed because, as much as they would love to, that would be way too many students.

“I mean, if a student was going to Broadway next year, I would love to recognize that!” Matzen said. “I’m open to suggestions.”

It is a time for seniors to recognize what they have achieved and celebrate with friends and family.

One of the seniors being recognized is Jake Peters. He will be attending Rockhurst in Kansas City to play soccer.

“It’s nice to know where I’m going and not having to worry or stress about where I want to go and where I’m going to play,” Peters said.

Peters is excited for everyone to come together Saturday and see where everyone decided to go and why.

“It’s cool that they’re recognizing that people are signing and where,” Peters said.

Sydney Vaughn, senior, plans to sign with Stony Brook in Long Island, New York, to play soccer.

“I’m really excited because it’s a fresh start, but it’s so far from home and I don’t have any friends up there,” Vaughn said. “I’m excited and nervous at the same time.”

She’s glad everyone is signing together this year with more media attention.

“This is a more festive atmosphere, and I am excited to be surrounded by so many more friends and family,” Vaughn said.
