Fun in the Sun adds store

Fun in the Sun was originally opened on Mother’s Day Weekend in 2012 by Nancy and Dan McGee.  The original location is in downtown Kirkwood and a new store opened in Chesterfield last Thursday.

Owner and founder, Nancy McGee, said her and her husband recognized pretty early that many of their customers were making the trek to Kirkwood to shop their brands.

“Many of our customers were coming from West County,” McGee said.  “We also had some coming from St. Charles.”

McGee said the enthusiasm for their concept grew way beyond their expectations and thought that expanding was necessary.

Before McGee opened Fun in the Sun, she was a leader in retail sales at Banana Republic and Apple.

“I have always enjoyed providing a wonderful environment for my customers,” McGee said.

“Dan and I knew there would be demand for some of the brands we wished were better represented in St. Louis.”

Some of the brands Fun in the Sun carries include Vineyard Vines, Southern Tide, Southern Marsh, Rowdy Gentleman, Krass & Co., Beyond Yoga, Southern Shirt Co and Johnnie-0.

“Our target audience is anybody in the family, whether it’s teenage boys, dads who golf or moms who run, like me” McGee said.

“Folks similar to us who want unique, active and preppy clothes with a coastal influence will also be attracted to our beach shop vibe.”

Alyssa Wintermute, senior, will be one of five retail employees at the new Fun in the Sun location.

Wintermute said there are currently five hired workers and the two owners, Nancy and Dan, will occasionally work at the new location as well.

“It’s right next to the Bread Co off of Clarkson,” Wintermute said.

The location of the new Fun in the Sun puts it about 4 minutes away from MHS and approximately 1.8 miles according to Google Maps.

Wintermute said she doesn’t know a lot about the store yet but she’s excited to start working there.

“Everybody is so nice and its already like a family there,” Wintermute said.

“Nancy is so nice she offers so many discounts for all varieties of customers like student, military, birthday, teacher and trainer discounts.”

Jono Lazaroff, senior, said even though summertime is over, he still plans on wearing brands such as Vineyard Vines and Southern Tide.

“I don’t dress preppy too often, but when I do I like to bring out my most frat attire,” Lazaroff said.

“I plan on shopping at Fun in the Sun quite often with all of my frat friends.”

Lazaroff said his preppy style is comfortable and classy.

“I’m confident that we can bring a laid-back and welcoming environment where people can discover some new brands, McGee said.”

“We hope that by expanding we can continue to reach more FUN customers.”
