Pep rally to support boys basketball

“We’re having a pep rally to congratulate the varsity basketball team for getting this far post-season,” Assistant Principal Dr. Jennifer Sebold said. “And we want to pump them up for a win.”

The pep rally begins at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7 in the large gym. The theme for the pep rally is to wear green. Dr. Sebold said she expects hundreds of students, parents, and teachers to attend the event.

“Although the exact activities for the pep rally have yet to be determined, we’re expecting Coach Shane Matzen to speak, highlight the starters and talk about season statistics,” Dr. Sebold said. “We might also have a free throw or dunking exhibition, and the cheerleaders and Mystique are likely to perform.”

Dr. Sebold said she’s very happy with school spirit lately.

“At the game on Saturday, there was so much energy,” Dr. Sebold said. “Students and teachers came out in full force, and the guys played the best I’ve ever seen them play.”

However, Dr. Sebold noted student support for the team has been strong all season.

Senior Caleb Bobo is president of Stang Gang and part of why school spirit is increasing.

“Josh Harris, Joel Schoenecker, and I are working hard to raise school spirit,” Bobo said. “We’re getting the word out about events and games through Twitter and Facebook.”

Bobo described a promise he made at the beginning of the season.

“Mitch Cox asked me to promise a full student section at every game,” Bobo said. “And I said I could make that promise as long as he promised me the state championship. We held up our end of the bargain, and so now, it’s really cool that the team is holding up their end as well.”

Bobo said the theme for the Thursday game will be to wear white, while the theme for the Friday or Saturday game will be to wear green again. Bobo also plans to go to the pep rally.

“The pep rally is a great way to get the MHS community excited for the games on Thursday, and hopefully, Saturday,” Bobo said.

Bobo said he would start chants such as “I believe that we will win” and the rollercoaster at the rally.
