“Captain McHugh” collects 1,000+ comic books

For some, it’s stickers. For others, it’s stamps. Colin McHugh, sophomore, collects comic books.

McHugh’s collection of more than 1,300 books includes characters such as Ultimate Spider-Man, Captain America, Superboy, Teen Titans, Justice League Dark, Flash, and Deadpool.

“I love comic books because pictures next to the dialogue make the story even better,” McHugh said.

McHugh started collecting at age five after his father gave him giant The Avengers compilation books. McHugh has three favorite characters: Deadpool, Superboy and Captain America.

“I like Captain America because he has strong morals,” McHugh said. “He doesn’t fight for fame; he fights to protect his people. Plus, unlike most superheroes, his powers weren’t given to him by accident. He was selected to receive powers because he’s such a good person.”

McHugh estimates he’s spent about $5,200 on acquiring his collection.

“They’re actually not worth that much because my comics are relatively new,” McHugh said. “But in terms of sentimental value, they’re priceless.”

However, McHugh does have four collector’s comic books dating back to the 1960s, including the volume of The Amazing Spider-Man where Spider-Man’s black suit first appears. In addition to collecting comic books, which he stores in his basement art studio, McHugh owns more than a dozen superhero T-shirts. He also paints superheroes in acrylic.

“I paint superheroes to honor them and try to communicate the full sense of heroism and wonder of every character,” McHugh said.

McHugh said he’s noticed some common themes in comic books.

“You should stand up for what you believe in,” McHugh said. “It’s okay to be an outsider. Teamwork, brains and willpower will get you past the toughest situations.”

McHugh frequently has conversations regarding comic books with his friend Barry King, sophomore.

“Comic books are very interesting to look at,” King said. “I like looking at the different art styles and how the visuals transitioned from the older to newer comics.”

King said he is impressed by McHugh’s comic book collection.

“He definitely knows what he’s talking about,” King said. “And his comic book knowledge is especially impressive for his age.”
